Impeachment threat exposes Congress’s retreat as wars and measles escalate
Fear of HEGSETH IMPEACHMENT sends Congress to early vacation
The episode links congressional avoidance, unclear war aims, rising economic pressure, and a politicized measles crisis to the stakes of the midterm elections.
- 1Impeachment articles targeting Pete Hegseth helped Republicans leave Washington before confronting questions about the Iran war.
- 2Mark Kelly says shifting war aims, Pentagon secrecy, and mounting costs are endangering service members and weakening public trust.
- 3Josh Shapiro describes Pennsylvania’s measles outbreak and accuses Robert F. Kennedy Jr. of suppressing death data.
Don't miss
Josh Shapiro accuses Robert F. Kennedy Jr. of personally intervening to keep four Pennsylvania measles deaths off the CDC dashboard.
The brief
Jen Psaki opens with a House Republican retreat: after Thomas Massie introduced impeachment articles against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over the Iran war, lawmakers left Washington early.
Senator Mark Kelly describes the danger facing U.S. troops, including his son sheltering from rocket attacks, while questioning shifting war aims and Pentagon secrecy.
Kelly also challenges the administration’s economic case, pointing to rising fuel and farm costs and dismissing promises of dramatic gas-price declines or $5,000 dividend checks.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro describes hundreds of measles cases, hospitalizations, and four deaths, then accuses Robert F. Kennedy Jr. of keeping those deaths off the CDC dashboard.
The episode’s through line is accountability: voters are asked to judge an administration over war costs, congressional avoidance, public-health misinformation, and promises that have not materialized.
