Eastern contenders expose their flaws as TV’s canon gets contested
The Fatal Flaws of the Eastern Conference Contenders! Plus, Awards and TV Talk!
The episode pairs a high-stakes audit of the Eastern Conference with a sharper question about how television greatness gets measured.
- 1Every Eastern contender carries a distinct playoff liability, from frontcourt depth and spacing to health, shooting, and defensive uncertainty.
- 2Philadelphia offers the highest upside, while New York emerges as the conference’s most complete team despite competing risks.
- 3The New York Times television ranking sparks arguments over cultural impact, audience size, influence, and shows that deserved better.
Don't miss
Zach argues that The Wire is superior to Breaking Bad, turning the television-list discussion into a debate over cultural consensus and artistic stature.
The brief
Kirk Goldsberry joins Zach Lowe for a team-by-team audit of the East, where every contender has a playoff fault line: depth, spacing, health, shooting, or defense.
Philadelphia’s talent makes it Kirk’s choice for the Eastern Conference Finals, but Zach gives New York respect as the conference’s most complete team.
The NBA conversation widens to award predictions and new push-off, screening, and flopping priorities before detouring through baseball and Saved by the Bell.
Joanna Robinson then turns to The New York Times’ television list, debating omissions, overrated picks, and whether cultural impact should outweigh craft.
The sharpest TV argument arrives when Zach places The Wire above Breaking Bad, while Joanna makes the case for The Shield and the overlooked Halt and Catch Fire.
Joanna recommends Lost as Zach’s next major project, while their broader debate weighs influence, audience size, historical importance, and the durability of a show’s run.
