AI’s financing problem deepens while rising oil keeps inflation risk alive

                        The big picture

Demand Cannot Pay Every Bill The AI doubts we covered Wednesday now have a sharper financing edge: strong demand does not necessarily make expensive debt sustainable. Axios reported CoreWeave (CRWV) bond yields above 15%; the stock is down 15% over the week through Thursday. Paul Kedrosky expects substantial debt restructuring, arguing that widening credit spreads—not just higher Treasury yields—signal doubts about repayment. Dan Ives disputes the broader AI selloff, pointing to strong demand and CoreWeave’s backlog while acknowledging financing risk. Their disagreement turns on whether that demand can overcome the cost of funding it.

Ed Elson: … seem that the likelihood that they will not be able to make their interest payments is extremely high. Do you see a world in which they do figure it out?

Paul Kedrosky: No. I see instead a world where, at best, you have fairly radical restructuring of their debt obligations which is what the markets are telling you, right? When the debt's trading at, say, 80 -odd cents on the dollar, when you do the default math, it's saying there's …

Oil Resists The Peace Trade Wednesday’s oil debate centered on the downside from peace; today’s new argument is that depleted inventories make price containment fragile. WTI rose 7% over the week to $101.91 a barrel as of October 14, moving with the bullish expert lean rather than the peace-driven bearish case. Patrick Ceresna points to rising deferred-contract prices and heavy short positioning, questioning how long the front-month contract can remain contained while inventories are depleted. His argument makes the physical supply cushion—not simply the next diplomatic headline—the unresolved issue for oil and inflation.

… on a geopolitical front, military operations continue to look like they're escalating, not de -escalating. The situation in the Strait of Hormuz looks as spicy as it's been in a long time. And really at this moment, the question is with such depleted inventories, how long can the front month of the WTI contract stay contained the way that it has been over the last three weeks?

Kontoor Changes Cramer’s Mind Jim Cramer’s new bullish case for under-the-radar Kontoor Brands (KTB) is company-specific, not an apparel recovery: he cites a planned $400 million accelerated buyback and underexploited growth at Helly Hansen. He says depressed valuation already reflects the difficult environment, although the shares have rallied 10% this week.

… think the environment's baked in. Their special situation was immunity to the typical apparel cycle. They're the kind of stuff that went up today. So here's the bottom line. Metals Need A Fed Limit After Wednesday’s valuation skepticism, Larry McDonald offers a different catalyst: a wounded consumer could limit further Fed tightening, and a signal that hikes are ending could lift gold and silver. He calls silver particularly attractive over the next 12 months, against a price backdrop in which SLV has fallen 10% over the month and GLD has lost 3%. His bullish case depends on a softer policy path, not merely cheaper metals.

And so they have to fake it till they make it. Essentially, they're faking this hiking cycle. They probably get one more in. And then once they tip their hand. to a softer path. That's where hard gold, silver, like silver right now is probably one of the best looking trades looking out 12 months because if they tip their hand that they could be done, gold and silver go up a lot.

Nebius Buzz Outruns Conviction Nebius (NBIS) ranks third in podcast attention on PodLume Trends, but only two experts have taken a side, split bullish and bearish. Dan Ives calls it a buying opportunity because he thinks financing fears have overwhelmed the demand story; the shares nevertheless fell 14% this week. Elevated attention is not broad investment conviction.

… sees is just tremendous. So I'm not going to, there's going to be pressure, but I do think the market's way overreacted here. I view it very similar to like the SaaS apocalypse type fears that we're seeing play out. I just think these are buying opportunities for some of these names when you look at Nebius, CoreWeave, and some of the others across tech.

December Risk Reaches Real Estate After Wednesday’s REIT-versus-hike-odds divergence, Winnie Cesar adds a timing distinction: she still sees December, rather than October, as the most likely month for a Fed increase, while noting pressure on margins and weaker underlying retail sales. The market assigns a 20% chance to a year-end Fed upper bound of at least 4.5%. By our reading—not Cesar’s stock call—that higher-rate outcome would weigh on Vanguard Real Estate ETF (VNQ) through financing costs and competing bond yields, yet the fund rose 2% this week.

Tom Keene: … at this, and first of all, you need to leave the studio and go to work. I mean, do we actually begin discussing with this inflation print an October increase?

Winnie Cesar: Well, I don't think so. I still think December is most likely. The interesting thing about here is margins, right? So when PPI goes up faster than CPI, that means that margins theoretically should be compressing. And that's something that we look …

Microsoft Defies Anthropic Odds Prediction markets moved against Microsoft (MSFT) this week by our reading of its Anthropic exposure: the chance of an Anthropic IPO by year-end fell from 82% to 72%, while the chance of an IPO-day closing valuation of at least $1.8 trillion by the end of 2027 fell from 82% to 64%. Microsoft nevertheless rose 3%. Brad Gerstner expects an offering within weeks rather than months—a challenge to the timing pessimism, but not an endorsement of that valuation threshold or proof that Microsoft’s shares must follow the odds.

In terms of when they're going to go public? Yeah. Yeah, I think that's I think we're talking, you know, weeks, not not months.
