The brief
Lefty Gunplay describes moving from Los Angeles street life and nine years in California prisons to a Grammy-winning collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, with pressure to turn one breakthrough into a durable career.
His account of prison politics, gang segregation, violence, and secretly writing music shows how survival rules followed him into a rap industry built on reputation and conflict.
A high-speed Corvette crash while intoxicated became a turning point, leading to sobriety, nine months in rehab, and the harder work of rebuilding his identity and family life.
The conversation widens to Latino identity, language, and the cultural bridge between Los Angeles street traditions and a growing music market shaped by corridos, reggaeton, and hip-hop.
With Snoop Dogg contributing to a remix and a first East Coast tour underway, Lefty frames recovery as a responsibility to fans, children, collaborators, and communities he once opposed.
