Southwest contenders face defining questions before the season
Spurs’ Hype, Rockets’ Leap & Cooper Flagg’s Future: Biggest Questions in the Southwest Division
The division’s outlook hinges on whether San Antonio can respond to its Finals loss, Houston can convert potential, and Dallas can accelerate its reset.
- 1San Antonio must solve its crowded lineup and shooting questions while turning Victor Wembanyama’s accountability into leadership.
- 2Houston’s ceiling depends on Fred VanVleet’s return, late-game execution, and whether Kevin Durant and Amen Thompson settle into complementary roles.
- 3Dallas has placed its future on Cooper Flagg while Kyrie Irving’s recovery and Dereck Lively II’s health shape the reset’s timeline.
Don't miss
The panel frames Cooper Flagg’s arrival as Dallas’ chance to restore hope quickly, while Kyrie Irving and Dereck Lively II determine how soon that hope can matter.
The brief
Brian Windhorst, Tim MacMahon, and Michael C. Wright preview a Southwest Division where every team carries a different pressure point, from San Antonio’s Finals response to Memphis’ roster overhaul.
The Spurs remain the division’s standard after reaching the Finals, but Victor Wembanyama’s leadership, Mitch Johnson’s rotations, Dylan Harper’s role, and shooting concerns complicate their next step.
Houston’s evaluation starts with Fred VanVleet’s return: his presence could restore natural roles, sharpen late-game execution, and preserve the growth players showed during his absence.
Dallas is attempting a reset around Cooper Flagg, with Kyrie Irving’s rehabilitation and Dereck Lively II’s foot problems determining whether hope becomes immediate competitiveness or a longer rebuild.
New Orleans must make a talented but inconsistent roster function, while Memphis tries to establish a new identity after sweeping changes and the end of the Ja Morant era.
The central question is not which team has the most talent, but which organization can turn uncertainty into a coherent season before the Western Conference tightens.
