Homeless Industrial Complex

Heard in 2 episodes across 1 show since Jul 2026

The homeless industrial complex (or homeless industry) is a pejorative term used to describe the network of government agencies, non-profit organizations, and private contractors that receive public funding to address homelessness. Critics argue that these entities have developed a vested financial interest in maintaining the problem rather than solving it, as their continued funding and employment depend on the persistence of the homeless population. The concept is closely related to the broader poverty-industrial complex, which critiques the privatization and monetization of social services.
