SpaceX’s AI rally leaves CoreWeave’s rebound believers waiting

The big picture

SpaceX’s Profits Do The Lifting SpaceX (SPCX) gave the AI rally something more tangible than revenue ambition: profits. AP reported that its better-than-expected earnings helped lift AI-related shares and push the S&P 500 up 0.6% Wednesday. Lou Whiteman separates the engines behind that result: AI supplies the revenue growth, but Starlink generates the profits. Nicolas Owens sees a strong business trajectory and better-than-expected Starlink subscriber growth, yet cautions that uneven capital spending makes quarterly results difficult to extrapolate. With SpaceX shares up 5% over the week, their difference is one of emphasis rather than direction: enthusiasm for growth still needs scrutiny of where the earnings come from and how repeatable they are.

Travis Hoium: They were really leaning into that.

Lou Whiteman: Yes. But look, This is, and it has been, it's a NeoCloud with a space side hustle. That is what they are. AI is delivering— I'm sorry, Elon, I said AI— is delivering the revenue growth. Starlink is generating the profits. So, there is a reason for space. But even then, that's …

Nathan Bets On A Rebound CoreWeave (CRWV) has a tactical bull despite the financing problem we examined on Monday: in Wednesday’s podcast, Dan Nathan predicted a tradable rebound, even while acknowledging that the Goldman upgrade should already have delivered it. The shares remain down 6% over the week, making his call a bet on a reversal rather than an endorsement of the recent price action. Wednesday also brought a specific relative-value counterpoint from Dustin Alper: he favors IREN (IREN), whose customer prepayments help fund expansion, over CoreWeave’s reliance on lenders if AI spending slows—a slowdown he does not expect imminently. IREN nevertheless fell 9% over the week, so that financing distinction has not protected its shares either. The new debate is whether a rebound can arrive before the funding concerns are resolved, not whether those concerns exist.

… Okay, tradable bounce here for sure. And it traded— the volume suggests that would happen. We're right back to these levels that we saw in the middle of July and a couple other times over the year, which is disappointing. I still think there's a tradable bounce coming but it should have happened on the back of the Goldman upgrade.

The day in signals

Bad Inflation, Bullish Bonds Monday’s rate-relief debate has a new twist: Ben Carlson has switched from bearish to bullish on long-dated Treasuries, arguing that a bad inflation release can mark the bottom once the damage is priced in. His reasoning draws on stocks bottoming amid bad inflation news, rather than requiring inflation to improve first. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) gained 2% this week, but Carlson explicitly stops short of saying the bond-market bottom has already happened.

… there was a really bad inflation print and people go, oh no, it's not coming down. And the stock market crashed 2 % pre -market. By the end of the day, it was up 2%. That was literally the bottom. The market bottomed on bad inflation news. That same thing is going to happen in the bond market. I don't know if last week was it. But that's what's going to happen is we're going to get a bad inflation print. People are going to go, oh, see, …

Oscar’s First Bull Arrives Late Oscar Health (OSCR) received its first tracked expert call Wednesday after shares had already risen 103% over six months. Brett Schaefer sees a long-term opportunity to take market share by targeting individual health insurance outside the employer market. His case rests on executing that business model, not simply repeating the stock’s recovery.

… on a forward earnings multiple, even though the trainings were negative at a very, very cheap forward earnings multiple. Given the disruptive nature of their model, which is going for the individual payer market outside of the employer payer market, you can see some analogies working there of being a market share taker over the long term. We'll see if they can execute that vision. But that's the one that makes the most sense to me. There's a few others. It's not the entire portfolio. I mean, …

Anthropic’s IPO Deadline Slipped The Anthropic IPO timing call missed its deadline: on September 4, Michael McKee expected pricing most likely in early October, after analyst preparation and the next filing steps. The market asking whether Anthropic would IPO by October 15 settled NO, making that specific timing call wrong—not establishing a broader forecasting record.

… to sources, they still need to schedule that analyst day. You do need to then have the banks working on this, have their analysts be able to formulate their models, which would then mean public flips sometime next week. So we're realistically looking at Anthropic pricing its IPO. the earliest the last day or two of September, but most likely sometime in early October
